The ASTM F3561 standard establishes a dynamic, time-based framework for evaluating the forced entry resistance of glazing assemblies. The standard defines four distinct levels (and sometimes references a fifth), each representing a more determined and better-equipped attacker.

These levels are differentiated by the number of initial impacts, the tools used in the assault, and the minimum time the assembly must deny physical access:

  • Level 1: Requires 60 seconds of resistance. The attack involves 5 initial impacts and the use of a screwdriver and pry bar.
  • Level 2: Requires 120 seconds of resistance. The attack involves 7 initial impacts and adds a hammer to the screwdriver and pry bar.
  • Level 3: Requires 180 seconds of resistance. The attack involves 10 initial impacts and includes a sledgehammer along with Level 2 tools.
  • Level 4: Requires 300 seconds (five minutes) of resistance. The attack involves 15 initial impacts and utilizes power tools in addition to all Level 3 tools.

To achieve higher ratings, such as Level 3, security window film must typically be paired with impact protection attachment systems (like wet glaze or mechanical anchoring) to ensure the glass remains secured within the frame during a sustained attack.
