The ASTM F3561 testing protocol for glazing systems follows a structured three-phase sequence designed to simulate a persistent real-world attack. The sequence includes:
- Initial Impacts: Technicians deliver a specified number of impacts using a calibrated pendulum device. This stage is designed to weaken the glass and simulate an attacker striking the surface with a heavy object.
- Tool Application: Immediately following the impacts, testers apply primary tools (such as a screwdriver, pry bar, hammer, or sledgehammer) directly to the damaged area to attempt penetration.
- Timed Resistance: A timed window begins as tools are applied. The system passes if it denies physical access for the duration required by the specific level being tested (ranging from 60 to 300 seconds). If a tool fully penetrates the assembly before the time limit expires, the system fails.
This sequence is performed on a complete glazing assembly—including the frame, glass, anchoring hardware, and security film—to ensure the results reflect real-world installation conditions rather than just the performance of the glass in isolation.
